Argentine Ministry of Defense Conducts Recent Testing of Enhanced TAM 2CAC Medium Duty Aircraft

Argentine Army Tests Modernized TAM 2CA2 Tank

In a significant technological advancement, the Argentine Army conducted tests on the modernized version of their Tanque Argentino mediano (TAM) at the Magdalena Tac shooting range. The tests, supervised by the Minister of Defense, Jorge Taia, aimed to verify the integration of cutting-edge systems into the TAM 2CA2 tank.

The Modernization Project of the TAM, the primary armored weapon of the Argentine Army, involves upgrading the TAM 2CA2 version with advanced systems designed for All-Time Combat (ATC) and improved shooting accuracy through the incorporation of an advanced digital fire control system.

Minister Jorge Taia expressed satisfaction with the progress made, stating, “We are very satisfied that this modernization advances within the deadlines that we have established, we hope to end the year with several modernized tanks and ready to integrate the operational units. This modernization will allow us to have state-of-the-art armored vehicles, suitable for both exercises and combat, and this is the result of the work carried out jointly with IMPSA and we can carry it out thanks to the National Fund for defense.”

One of the notable improvements achieved is the increased movement speed of the tank’s turret, achieved by replacing the original hydraulic movement system with an electric one. This technological leap aligns the TAM 2CA2 with the most modern tanks worldwide, enhancing its operational capabilities for modern conflicts. The initial phase aims to modernize 74 units with this advanced system, followed by an Operational Technical Evaluation (ETO) to ensure they meet the Argentine Army’s operational requirements.

After the successful shooting tests, Minister Taia visited the 8th Tank Cavalry Regiment “Cazadores General Necochea” to witness the modernized TAM 2CA2 in action.

The TAM, originally developed with the assistance of German company Thyssen-Henschel, fulfills the Argentine Army’s need for a modern, lightweight, and fast tank with a low profile and ample firepower to combat contemporary armored threats. It features a 105mm main gun, which is manufactured in Argentina as the FM K.4 Modelo 1L, and boasts a low-profile turret based on designs from the Leopard 1A4 and Leopard 2 tanks.

The successful modernization of the TAM 2CA2 marks a significant step forward for the Argentine Army, ensuring it remains well-equipped and capable of meeting modern military challenges.
