At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, director Roland Emmerich, the mastermind behind the first two films, provided an encouraging update about the possibility of Independence Day 3.

Emmerich Teases a Story Ready for Action

During a roundtable interview with The Direct, Emmerich revealed that he already has a complete story for the third installment. However, the project’s fate now rests with Disney, which acquired the franchise’s rights after purchasing 20th Century Fox in 2019.

Emmerich stated:
“I have a story and everything. Trust me, I have a story… I’m ready to go.”

While no formal discussions have taken place between Emmerich and Disney, his enthusiasm remains unwavering.

The Journey So Far

The original Independence Day (1996), starring Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum, became a cultural phenomenon, earning over $817 million at the global box office. Its sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), was met with mixed reviews and garnered $397 million worldwide. Despite the lukewarm reception of the second film, Emmerich had plans for two more sequels, though their realization hinged on Resurgence’s success.

The 2019 Disney acquisition of 20th Century Fox further complicated the series’ future, leaving fans in limbo.

Disney’s Potential Interest

Emmerich remains optimistic, believing Disney could be interested in reviving the franchise, given its penchant for blockbuster franchises. In a 2020 interview, he speculated:
“Hollywood is a strange, strange place these days… I have a feeling Disney would maybe be interested in doing it. They like that kind of franchise movie.”

Although no official progress has been made, the enduring popularity of Independence Day ensures the franchise remains on fans’ radar. With Emmerich’s readiness and a story in hand, the prospect of Independence Day 3 is far from extinguished.
