Lithuania Bolsters Baltic Defense with Acquisition of Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to Counter Russian Threat

Lithuania Enhances Military Intelligence Capabilities with New UAV Procurement

The Ministry of Defence in Lithuania has announced the initiation of procurement procedures for 35 UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) systems, comprising 26 “mini” and 9 “small” types. This move aims to bolster the intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities of the Lithuanian armed forces, a much-needed enhancement according to Minister of National Defence, Arvydas Anushauskas.

Presently, the Lithuanian Armed Forces lack suitable tactical drones for reconnaissance and observation missions. The acquisition of these systems is expected to fill this critical gap and significantly improve the military’s intelligence capabilities.

The specific criteria for UAVs to be purchased for intelligence and reconnaissance operations dictate that they must belong to either the “mini” or “small” class, with a maximum weight of 150 kg. These UAVs are expected to fulfill various roles, including target detection and identification, target tracking, directing, and even correcting artillery fire.

Within the “mini” UAV category, these drones will weigh around 20 kg and can reach altitudes of up to 1000 meters, covering an effective range of up to 25 km. On the other hand, the “small” UAVs, weighing over 20 kilograms, boast an effective range of up to 50 km and the capability to reach altitudes of up to 1,500 meters.

Both the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Armed Forces emphasize the importance of acquiring and integrating new reconnaissance and combat vehicles as part of an ongoing effort to enhance the military’s combat capabilities.

Additionally, it has been revealed that the Ministry of National Defence in Lithuania is engaged in negotiations with the United States government to procure an additional UAV system alongside the ones already planned for purchase. The Lithuanian military’s request in these discussions reportedly centers around the Switchblade UAV.

The Switchblade UAV, often described as a kamikaze drone, has earned its reputation in supporting conventional and special operations forces. It is designed for use both in the field and from fixed defensive positions. Notably, the Switchblade 300 variant, equipped with a patented wave shutdown feature, excels at engaging non-line-of-sight targets.

This versatile UAV is backpackable and can be rapidly deployed from various platforms, including air, sea, or land. It provides real-time GPS coordinates and video-enhanced targeting capabilities, all while minimizing collateral damage. In addition to its striking capabilities, the Switchblade is also employed for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes, further enhancing its utility for modern military operations.
