Even before giving birth, Cary and Tim Patonai had been informed that their baby was going to be substantial. The doctor had predicted a birth weight of over six kilograms based on Cary’s growing belly. “He was so big that I had almost double the amount of amniotic fluid, which means my belly was even larger, and I was incredibly uncomfortable. It’s an understatement to say that,” Cary explains.
During her final ultrasound, Cary was informed that the baby weighed 5.8 kilograms, but it was anticipated that the actual weight would be slightly less at birth. However, that was not the case.
Originally scheduled for a planned C-section on October 5th, Cary’s water broke a day earlier, prompting an emergency delivery. She was admitted to a hospital in Arizona, where the arrival of son Finnley caused quite a stir. Weighing in at 6.3 kilograms, he amazed everyone in the hospital.
“As soon as they lifted him out, they exclaimed, ‘Oh my God, he’s huge!’ Everyone was in awe, exclaiming, ‘I’ve never seen such a big baby before. I can’t believe it.’ He was perfectly round and adorable in every way. He truly is my cuddly little honey bear,” Cary lovingly describes.
The hospital staff encountered difficulties when attempting to dress the newborn baby. His size necessitated special orders for diapers, as the standard hospital supplies were too small. Even the clothes the family had prepared in advance proved insufficient; they had to make an urgent trip to the store to purchase clothing designed for infants aged six to nine months.
Before Finnley was allowed to go home, he spent several days in the hospital’s neonatal ward. “At one point, when he was in the nursery with other babies, his weight equaled the combined weight of the other three infants,” Cary reveals.
The Patonai family’s remarkable journey into parenthood began with an unexpected surprise—the birth of an extraordinary baby boy whose size amazed everyone around him.
