The Extraordinary Story of Sasha: A Baby Born Without Eyes

Sasha, whose full name is Alexander K, is a unique and cheerful six-month-old baby born without eyes due to a rare condition known as SOX2 anophthalmia syndrome. He is currently in search of a loving home after his young mother abandoned him, not feeling confident enough to provide him with the care he would require.

Sasha’s journey is exceptional because most babies with this condition often have multiple other health problems, but Sasha remains otherwise healthy. Nurses caring for him have described him as a “cheerful baby” who loves to play and adores swimming.

Despite not having eyes, Sasha is remarkably content and enjoys engaging with his surroundings. His medical condition is particularly rare, with only two other cases registered globally. He is one of only three babies in the world born without eyeballs.Sasha also has two cysts on his forehead, which are planned to be surgically removed. Although he faces a challenging future due to his condition, he continues to live happily.

Sasha’s condition is SOX2 anophthalmia syndrome, which affects one in a quarter of a million people. Although he may not have eyes, Sasha is undergoing regular check-ups and tests like any other baby his age.

Currently, there is “no chance” that Sasha will ever regain his vision, but this hasn’t dampened his spirit. His caregivers have noted that he is a peaceful, smiling baby who lights up when he hears familiar voices. Sasha’s mother signed his refusal papers at the maternity hospital, and there is no information about his father.

Sasha is now available for adoption or foster care. Initially, Russian parents are considered for adoption, but if no suitable match is found, he could be placed with foreign parents. Adoption to the US is currently subject to certain restrictions.

Sasha’s nurse recently took him to St. Petersburg for surgery to implant tiny eye orbs, ensuring that his face won’t deform as he grows. These surgeries will be performed every six months, with progressively larger orbs each time.

Sasha’s case is one of only three in the world, with another well-documented case being that of “miracle” baby Archie Innes, who lives in Sydney, Australia, with Scottish parents. Archie also has significant health challenges, including severe gross motor delay, mild-to-moderate hearing impairment, and moderate aspiration.

Sasha’s extraordinary journey and his radiant spirit serve as a reminder of the resilience and hope that can be found even in the face of the most unique challenges. He is now in search of a loving family that will provide him with the care and support he needs.
