The Rock and the 2024 Mummy Movie Rumors

Speculation ignited when a trailer surfaced on the FoxStar Media YouTube page, hinting at Johnson starring in The Mummy: Resurrection. This teaser suggests a possible release in 2024. However, it’s unclear whether this would be a sequel or a reboot.

The purported trailer starts with archaeologists uncovering a hidden pyramid and city beneath the Egyptian sands, only to unleash a mysterious spirit. Johnson is then shown jetting off to Egypt for “a tough challenge,” where he encounters a new evil spirit after opening a sarcophagus containing a mummy.

Previous Mummy Franchise Rumors

This isn’t the first time The Mummy franchise has been the subject of viral speculation. Fans once buzzed about Brendan Fraser returning for The Mummy 4 after a supposed poster appeared online. Maria Bello, who took over Rachel Weisz’s role as Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell in The Mummy 3, mentioned in 2008 that a fourth installment was certain, but it never materialized. That film would have featured Fraser’s Rick O’Connell in South America, with John Hannah reprising his role and Antonio Banderas as the main villain.

Instead, Universal rebooted The Mummy in 2017 with Tom Cruise, aiming to launch the Dark Universe franchise. Unfortunately, the reboot was a financial failure, losing nearly $100 million and halting any further franchise plans.

Debunking the New Trailer

The recent trailer featuring The Rock can be debunked as a fake. The footage is repurposed from other films, and the dialogue doesn’t match the actors’ lip movements.

Will The Mummy Release in 2024?

Given the trailer’s inauthenticity, there’s no evidence of a new The Mummy movie slated for 2024. Currently, there are no reports suggesting a continuation of the franchise, whether through a reboot or a fourth film.

However, that doesn’t rule out future possibilities. Brendan Fraser expressed interest in returning to the franchise in a January 2023 interview with Deadline, saying, “Sign [him] up” for a new Mummy film. He reiterated this sentiment to Variety in 2022, stating he’d be open to returning if the right idea came along.

The Rock’s Busy Schedule

Meanwhile, The Rock’s packed schedule makes a new Mummy movie unlikely in the near future. He’s set to star alongside Chris Evans in the action holiday film Red One, and a post-credits scene in 2023’s Fast X hinted at his involvement in Fast & Furious 11, slated for 2025. Additionally, Johnson will reprise his role as Maui in Disney’s live-action Moana reboot, expected to debut on June 27, 2025.

While The Mummy: Resurrection appears to be another false rumor, fans remain eager to see if and when this iconic franchise will venture into new territory.
